~"The most ambitious attempt in Yiddish encylopedias" (Enc. Jud. 6, p. 731). Editor and founder was Raphael Abramowitz (1880-1963), socialist leader and chief spokesman of the second generation of Bund leaders. In 1920 he moved from Russia to Berlin, in 1939 to Paris and in 1940 to New York. The encyclopaedia was published by the Dubnov Foundation and later in the USA by the Central Yiddish Culture Organisation (CYCO). The systematic section on sociology, history and literature of the Jewish people is particularly outstanding in articles on the Yiddish language and literature. Issues of 16 pp., later on 8 pp., in each issue at least one or two full-page satirical (fiercely anti-Jewish) coloured drawings by L.Bourgeois, Willette, Em.Bayard, Gravelle, Em.Courtet, Donville, A.Esnault. Publication went on till Sept.1897. Drumont's activities were the ouverture to the Dreyfus-Affair. This periodical was very significative for Theodor Herzl, showing clearly the French antisemitic tendencies during the time of his stay in Paris from Oct. 1891 till july 1895.

~In Yiddish. Jewish socialist-anarchist monthly (after June 1886 weekly). Founded by Morris Vinchevsky (1856-1932), a radical socialist immigrant from Lithuania, the first to promote socialism in the Yiddish language, the vernacular of the jewish workers. The `Arbayter Fraynd' started to appear on July 15, 1885 as 'an open of youthful talent among the recent immigrants from Russia. One of them was Philip Krantz, who was apopinted editor. In 1886 the Journal came under full control of the International Worker's Educational Club, founded in London in 1884. Because of its anti-religious attitude clerical leaders of Anglo-Jewry viewed the Arbayter Fraynd's propaganda as a danger to the Jewish community. They finally succeeded to bribe the printer, who left England after publication of the issue of 6 May 1887. The compositor of this issue had changed the usual appeal at the back page to spread the Arbayter Fraynd into `to destroy' in bold characters). On 12 May the editors published an announcement to the workers (included in the present set) explaining the situation. Publication was interrupted until 5 August, when it was printed on the Club's own press. Shortly afterwards Benjamin Feigenbaum 'master of anti-religious satire' became a major contributor. After J. Jaffe had joined the editorial board in 1887, and S. Yanovski in 1888, the anarchists came into the foreground. In 1892 the paper became the exclusive organ of the anarchist-communist party. ~Rare collection of a literary series published by the pioneer of modern Hebrew publishing. Abr. Shalkovich (1867-1921), Russian Hebrew author, settled in Warsaw in 1891 and started a new medium of spreading Hebrew literature with the Sifrei Agurah (the "one penny") series of attractive and reasonably priced booklets. In 1893 he set up the Achiasaf publishing house and published the Luach Achiasaf. In 1896 he started a new publishing house Tushiyyah, publishing several series of literature, of which the Bibliotheka Ivrit was the largest and most successfull. See Enc. Jud. 14, p. 1268-1269. ~L'Educatore Israelita (1853-1874) was originally intended for children but it enlarged its scope and became a force in Piedmontese Jewry, largely responsible for the reorganization of the communities. It was edited by Giuseppe Levi and Esdra Pontremoli. After Giuseppe Levi's death in 1874 the new editor Flaminio Servi changed the title in Il Vesillo Israelitico, which continued to appear until 1922, containing a large number of historical and literary studies, a valuable source of history of Italian Jewry. Later editors were Ferruccio Servi, Aldo Lattes and Gughelmo Lattes (see Roth, The history of the Jews of Italy, p.500). Many volumes separately available.
